A legacy of care and compassion
Providing compassionate funeral services to families in Gateshead since 1946, W. Lauderdale & Son Funeral Services is a proudly independent, family-run business. Spanning three generations, our commitment to care, dignity and professionalism has made us a trusted name within the local community for nearly 80 years.
From humble beginnings
W. Lauderdale & Son Funeral Services was established in 1946 by Billy Lauderdale, who became a trusted figure in Gateshead for his dignity, honesty and service. As an independent family business, we have remained committed to delivering compassionate funeral services from the very beginning.
Billy’s son, Bill Lauderdale, joined in 1961, bringing over 50 years of dedicated service as both a Funeral Director and a qualified embalmer. His wife Doris also played a vital role, supporting families until her retirement in 2014. The values of care and respect they upheld still form the foundation of our work today.
Three generations of dedication
Today, the business is led by William R Lauderdale, Billy’s grandson and the third generation of the Lauderdale family to serve the Gateshead community. With over 25 years of experience, William continues to guide our team with integrity and compassion.
William’s family assist by handling the day-to-day running of the business, helping local families with quiet dedication. Funeral Director Alex Nelson, who joined in 2023, further strengthens our close-knit team. Every person here shares the same mission: to support and care for you as if you were a member of our own family.
Proud of our roots, committed to your care
Over nearly 80 years, we’ve become a respected name in Gateshead, trusted for our personal approach and unwavering standards. We are long-standing members of the National Association of Funeral Directors (since 1960), the Institute of Embalmers (since 1973), and the British Institute of Funeral Directors (since 1985).
These affiliations reflect our ongoing commitment to quality, care and ethical service. While much has changed since 1946, our purpose will always be to deliver compassionate funeral services that help families find peace of mind and honour their loved ones in a way that is personal, meaningful and dignified.
